MIKE STACEY

Mike Stacey is a Maryland native and is a member of the well-known Sam Grow Band. While he is primarily self-taught he has extensive knowledge of music theory, has songwritten for artists and has experience in recording and performance (He has opened for Trace Adkins, Kings X, 10,000 Maniacs, Bobby Blue Band, and Roy Ayers) and has taught guitar at Hot Licks for over 30 years! He has studied and is able to teach many genres including: Jazz, Blues, Funk, Rock and Country.

JEREMY COLBORN

Jeremy Colborn started playing guitar at 13 and eventually picked up the bass and drums at 16. Since 16, he went on to perform several shows throughout D.C, Maryland and Virginia and has opened for several international acts. He has experience studying and teaching: rock, metal, blues,  jazz and classical. When it comes to teaching, Jeremy welcomes all playing levels and can also teach 6 or 7 string guitars. Whether it be simply learning to play new songs, preparing you for the stage or diving into music theory-Jeremy is here to help!

JIM QUEEN

Jim Queen is a guitar and violin instructor and has played for over 30 years- performing for over 6 Presidents and Heads of State and has even performed The Sound of Music for Maria von Trapp herself. He has performed as a vocalist and guitarist at the Maison/Francaise in Washington, D.C. singing only in french.  Jim is also a BMI registered songwriter and has over two dozen songs published.  He teaches pop/ classical/ country/ folk styles on both instruments and focuses on mastering chords and music theory.

MICHELE ROBERTS

 

 Instrument(s): Piano

 

Michele was classically trained in piano throughout her early school years and began teaching private piano lessons in 1992. She enjoys teaching all skill levels, and focuses on classical notes, sight reading, chord and ear-training. These focuses provide the student with a broad foundation in all facets of music. Her students have ranged from 4 years old to 60 years old. If you're looking to explore the Piano and music theory- Michele is the instructor for you!

KAY DARBY-FINCH

 

 Instrument(s): Piano, Brass, Woodwinds

 

Kay has devoted her life to the study, teaching, and performance of music. At age 10, she began studying woodwind and brass instruments through her school band program. The first instrument she played was the flute and two years later she began studying the French Horn. Along the way, she learned to play mpiano, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet and trombone. After gradationg high school, she went on to attend the Crane School of Music at the State University College in Postdam, New York where she had the oppurtunity to play for the 1980 Winter Olympics as it took place in Lake Placid,New York. After receiving her Bachelors Degree in Music Education in 1982 she began teaching and developing the music programs at private schools throughout Bergen County, New Jersey where she stayed for two years. In 1985, Kay and her husband moved to Southern Maryland where she began private teaching and discovered that she was more skilled teaching on a one-on-one basis.Kay teaches ALL woodwind instruments and brass instruments as well as piano. She enjoys teaching all ages, skill levels, and personalities!

MATT STRAIN

Matt is a native Washingtonian and an alumni of the Charles County School system. After graduating from McDonough in 1986, Matt enlisted in the navy. Upon returning from the navy, Matt took to the drums and studied locally. He went on to tour with local bands, he became a member of the gospel choir at Mt. Cavalry Catholic Church, and continued his education and studying with John Thomokos. He attended the  Levine School of Music in Washington, D.C. where he studied drum set, orchestral, and various styles of world rythyms. Matt continuously studies different styles and concepts of music to pass on to his students and has about 15 years of teaching experience.

GENE QUADE

Gene is one of Hot Licks vocal coaches with extensive experience in preforming and recording. He is a bassist and background vocalist from the well-known Sam Grow Band. Gene has studied classical voice at PG College with Darrel Parsons and has trained with voice instructor, Kenny Taylor. He has studied Voice technique, Health training, and Performance coaching.

ALLI RIVERA

 Alli Rivera is a signed recording artist who has performed solo and with several bands all over the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area. She has studied several singing styles such as Jazz, Contemporary, Musical Theater, Pop, R&B, and Classical. Alli's knowledge and insight on working in the industry allows her to be able to teach lessons focusing on vocal preperation for studio sessions, gigs, musicals, and other live performances. Alli tailors all of her lessons to each individual student. These lessons are ideal for all levels of experience, including the beginner who wants to try something new, or the seasoned singer who wants to maintain and keep up with their vocal abililites.

BRODERICK ROBINSON

Broderick "Bay-Bro" Robinson is a Washingtonian, Master Drummer, Gospel Recording Artist, Song Writer, Music Arranger, and Drum instructor. At the age of seven (7) , he studied percusion at the DC Music Center and by the age of eighteen(18) he was a drum instructor for the Music Center and remained there for fifteen years.  He now teaches at Hot Licks! He has ministered with several well-known gospel artists and musicians.  Some of his spiritual influences include Pastor James J. Robinson, The Tree of Life Christian Ministries & Paster Walter E. Lattimore, Victory Church International. His musical influences are Dave Weckl, Omar Highkeen, and Max Roach. Broderick loves the lord, his family (wife, Tammy and 3 sons) ,children, music of all styles and sharing his God given gift with others.

CHARLES STEWART

 

 Instrument(s): Drums

 

Charles story with music starts as early as 4 years old playing drums and piano.By 15, he gave his first live performance. After that- music and Charles were stuck together.  By high school, he was touring with a local funk group in Washington, D.C. through 26 cities. Throughout his late High school and college years he performed extensively playing classical, jazz, rock, funk, go-go, gospel, marching band, R&B, and local rap artists. He has performed with Sarah Vaughn, Little Benny and the Master Pandamonium and much more! He has done recording work with Def Jam artists Steady Eddy, recorded with go-go Mario with Double Agent Rock and with Little Benny and the Master Pandamonium. Some of his influences include Max Roach, Neil Peart, Dennis Chambers, and George Clay. Throughout his college years and beyond he has served as a percussion instructor and assistant band director at Morgan State University. He now continues his work here at Hot Licks!

K.J BAKER

 

Insrument(s): Drums 

 

K.J. has over 10 years teaching and 30 years of experience. He started playing and studying the drums at age 6 and went on to  play for Symphonic, Marching, and Jazz bands in high school and several bands outside of school.  He also has experience recording and a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary's College of Maryland . KJ is an advanced drummer, bass player, and guitar player. He enjoys teaching Rock, Latin, Funk, Jazz, Go-go, Metal, and much more! He accepts students with a skill level of beginner to advanced.

CAMERON GAINER

Cameron is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter,composer and educator raised in Mechanicsville,MD. Only four years after picking up Drums, Cameron was accepted into the prestegious Berklee College of Music. During his time there- he honed his skills on drums, bass, and piano while studying privately with successful musicians in the industry such as Terri Lyne Carrington, and Tony "Thunder" Smith.

JOHN WRIGHT

John Wright recieved is a Brass instructor at Hot Licks. John teaches the trumpet, cornet, trombone, etc. He recieved his Masters of Music and a B.A in Education. John wpent 30 years serving in the U.S. military and played with the U.S.Marine Band in Washington, DC. John has experience playing orchestral and concert ensembles as well as quintet and brass choir performances  as well as jazz, dixieland, rythm and blues, rock, and big swing band.

DERRICK ROBINSON 

 

 Instrument(s): Drums

 

Derrick is a Washingtonian, Proffesional Drummer, Drum instructor, and Videographer. He was inspired, encouraged and trained by his father, Broderick Robinson, who is a Master Drummer and Certified Drum Instructor.  Since the early age of 2, he was taught and groomed as a percussionist. At the age of 13, he was playing professionally with high profile clients throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. He went on to graduate high school and attend the Art Institues of Washington.  He is lead drummer at Universal Praise Ministries and has found a great love in teaching his gift and giving back to the community.

TED MICHALEK

If your learning to shred, solo or just strum along to your favorite songs, Ted can help you gain the knowledge and techniques you need. Ted has over 18 years of experience opening for international acts, playing with orchestras for musical theater and recording.He's studied: heavy metal, classic rock, blues, and show tunes. 
He has taught acoustic and electric guitar for over 10 years and is comfortable instructing many different levels and ages. All of his lessons are tailored to the individual student's needs.

BT RICHARDSON

B.T. Richardson is a self-taught musical artist who has professionally played music for over 20 years and traveled around the world playing musical artists and legends as diverse as El Debarge and Bo Diddley. He has played live all over Washington, D.C. (i.e. Spirit of Washington cruises) and all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe. His music stylings can be heard on Comedy Central, Premium Blend and KET TV.
