Hot Licks Guitar Shop has just completed their third annual fund raiser for the support of breast cancer.
The Hot Licks team will be walking the DC Avon Walk for the Cure on May 5th and 6th 2012.
For our fund raiser we have been selling $1 raffle tickets in the shop since February and have raised over $2000 for breast cancer research. For each raffle ticket sold we posted a pink ribbon with names of the donors on them. Our walls are now adorned with over 2,000 pink ribbons.
In support of our cause, our friends at Korg donated a Vox AC151C Guitar amplifier (an amp that retails for around $900 US) and Paul McDermott, the owner of Hot Licks Guitar Shop, donated a Les Paul Custom Ephiphone guitar (a guitar that sell for around $700 US) both to be raffled off separately to two individuals who donated to the fundraiser.
We held the raffle drawing at our annual drum competition on April 14th. The winner of the Vox amp was John Mimms. John is one of our students and was thrilled to win the amplifier. The winner of the Epiphone guitar was Austin Teets. This is where the story takes on a little twist.
Austin’s grandmother, Virginia Redding, a long time customer who was well know by our staff used to bring Austin, her grandson, to Hot Licks for guitar lessons for over four years. In March of this year Virginia lost her battle with breast cancer. We had created a special place to hang the pink ribbons around our front doorway to honor of Virginia and even made a sign that simply said “In Loving memory of Virgina Redding”. Mark Teets, who had stopped in the shop on the day of his mother Virginia’s funeral had donated to our fund raiser and received raffle tickets in Virginia’s name for both of his son’s Austin and Gabriel.
On the day of the raffle, Becca, one of our staff members reached into the little bucket containing tickets and read the name on the card aloud. It was a great surprise to everyone when Austin’s name was called to be the winner of our Epiphone guitar. As Becca and Cyn, (one of our owners) explained to the crowd the news of Virginia’s passing in March of this year, a strange silence fell upon the room followed by a long slow round of applause.
We are so very happy to have Austin Teets, Virginia’s grandson as the winner of our Epiphone guitar. We feel it could not have gone to a more deserving person and family. Perhaps they had a little help from above.
Thanks to all of those who have supported our fund raiser for breast cancer awareness. We will see you all again next spring ready to hang more pink ribbons!
